Graduate Stories: “I wish I’d done more work experience or volunteering”

Age: 22
Have you graduated yet?: Yes
What city do you live in?: Norwich
Where do you live?: With my mum
What’s your current working situation?: No job

What do you think you’ve struggled with the most after leaving education?

Finding jobs related to my degree in the area that I want to work in.

What do you wish you’d known or had done before leaving university?

That getting a job isn’t as easy as going online and typing in what you want to do. I wish I’d also done more work experience or volunteering.

Do you think there’s enough resources out there for young people making the transition from education to adult life? (If so, what? If not, what do you want to see more of?)

No, from a uni student perspective I don’t think the uni helped at all. They just want you to get your degree and that’s it. Would like to see more help and knowledge of where to find a job.

Making that first transition between being a student and working full-time can be so hard, but there are def transferrable skills, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving that can be applied across job functions. So even if the first job after graduating isn’t the dream job, it can be a stepping stone to get to where we hope to be!

Plus, volunteering as a young adult (after college/uni) is still a great way to build skills, experience, and to network. Good luck to whoever shared this story!

I really agree with this! Transferable skills and experience in any job is a great way to get your dream job eventually! Thanks for your comment 🙂

It is interesting to learn about different things grads wish they would have done while being in school. I didn’t do volunteer work, so I can relate from that aspect. Thanks for sharing!
