Graduate Stories: “I forgot about what’s next”

Age: 25
Have you graduated yet?: Yes
What city do you live in?: Birmingham
Where do you live?: With a partner
What’s your current working situation?: Full-time job

What do you think you’ve struggled with the most after leaving education?

Really struggled getting a graduate job after university. Rent payments are also very high and I couldn’t save for a long time.

What do you wish you’d known or had done before leaving university?

To do more self reflection to narrow my job search and to really focus on self improvement including improving CV and applications. I also wish I spent more time throughout uni focusing on what my career would look like. I was so focussed on the degree that I forgot about “what’s next”.

Do you think there’s enough resources out there for young people making the transition from education to adult life? (If so, what? If not, what do you want to see more of?)

No absolutely not, that’s why I started Gradvance. To be able to share knowledge to help people transitioning from uni to the working world, to help them understand what a good career looks like for them and to providing insight into how to succeed in the application process. This is all stuff I wish I knew when I left.

Thank you to Dan Mian, founder of Gradvance, for sharing his experiences of graduate life!

  1. Hey, what an interesting interview. I wish I’d known more about the opportunities for me from my chosen degree, I graduated into a box and unfortunately I’m struggling now to leave the industry my degree was in. I wish I’d done a more versatile degree.

Ah I’m glad you enjoyed it! Oh no I’m sorry to hear that, I shared a blog about how to get a job in an industry that your degree wasn’t in, that might help you a bit?
